After listening to The Doors , Marilyn decided he wanted to be a musician. Marilyn attended Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, studying journalism and writing articles for a music magazine. Manson created his stage name by using names of two huge pop culture figures: Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson.
He was inspired by the fact that both movie stars and killers are put on magazine covers. In the early 90s, Marilyn also played bass in a faux-Christian metal group called Satan on Fire and he played drums in a band called Mrs. Manson and his former bandmate, Twiggy Ramirez, reunited and delivered the band's seventh album, The High End of Low , in After founding a record label named Hell, etc.
The latter album, co-produced with Tyler Bates, earned strong reviews for its focused, blues-tinged sound. The tracks were part of the band's 10th album, Heaven Upside Down , which was praised by critics for building on the promise of the previous studio effort.
While co-headlining the Hell Never Dies Tour with Rob Zombie in summer , Manson said he hoped to put out a new album by the end of the year.
That same year, he made his film debut in David Lynch's Lost Highway. Throughout Manson's career, he has been accused and vilified for being a Satan worshipper, and for following the Church of Satan, of which he claimed to be a "reverend. Manson was once engaged to actress Rose McGowan. He married burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese in late , but they divorced in amid rumors of the rocker's affair with actress Evan Rachel Wood. Manson later was briefly engaged to Wood. On February 1, , Wood posted a statement on her Instagram accusing Manson of abuse.
I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander or blackmail. The following day, Manson responded to the claims on his Instagram.
Regardless of how — and why — others are now choosing to misrepresent the past, that is the truth. And he went to journalism college anyway. There was Marilyn Manson, but there was no music yet. You, Brian, gave them all to Marilyn Manson? So now we can go on to more cheerful things. How he lashed out at his mother as a teenager. How he was sent to a Christian school he hated. How he was beaten up by other children who thought he was gay. How his grandfather was allegedly into bestiality.
But he has not, to my knowledge, talked about the effect of the hows and whys of it. It reminds me of Sam Shepard , literary high priest of dysfunctional American families, who I once interviewed and who told me a very similar story of his father returning from the Second World War in trauma, unable to relate to his family, and the impact that the violence had on everyone else.
For Shepard, violence and secrets and the American family are all of a piece. And so it seems with Manson, too. I had to become this homunculus of sorts for my mother. And then I wanted to get away from it. I became his placeholder. My mother would even call me by his name. It also seems less surprising that Marilyn Manson has continued to speak to, and articulate the concerns of, alienated young men.
Has it made you think differently about parenthood, I ask him. Is it more circle-of-life stuff? Most infamously, during an appearance in Salt Lake City, Manson ripped apart a copy of the Book of Mormon while on-stage. The Church of Satan's founder, Anton LaVey, also bestowed upon him the title of "Reverend," further stoking conservatives' fears.
