Can you use the minimus trail on the road

A crowd-favorite that has returned to the glory of its original design, it is a favorite of ours for an entry-level minimalist shoe. Offering a slight, 4mm drop and a firm midsole, the stout construction of this shoe will help ease the transition of feeling every bump in the road.

A Vibram outsole with multi-directional lugs could offer better traction, but the outstanding breathability of the lightweight upper will keep you on the trail for miles.

The distinction as a great entry-level option in no way means that this shoe is insignificant — the Trail 10v1 offers a level of performance on both trails and roads that is guaranteed to impress even elite-level runners.

Performance Comparison Lightweight in look and feel, but burly in terms of construction and durability. We really appreciated the midsole at the nexus of dirt and road. Here, our lead tester takes this shoe onto pavement while linking up singletrack in the mountains above Santa Fe, NM.

Stitching the tongue into the sidewalls is a thoughtful addition that supports the midfoot wrap of this shoe, keeping your foot solidly in place and the shoe moving more naturally.

After testing two rounds of these shoes, we have no reason to believe that there is any change to the stack height of the updated colorways. A more slender toe box still allows for some natural toe splay, but it is not quite as wide as other models in this review. Not the lightest scale weight in this review, but this shoe will undoubtedly shave off valuable ounces from a more conventional trail runner.

Round lugs are designed for multi-directional traction. We found that this worked well on uniform surfaces, like rock and pavement, but not so well on loose dirt. Steep and loose! We found it is better and safer to side-hill in these shoes rather than point it straight when running downhill. From the heat of the road and back onto the calm of the trail, these shoes transitioned from one surface to the next with ease and agility.

The Minimus Trail has a heel thickness of 9mm and 5mm forefoot — more minimal than the Road version. And you will feel the ground a lot more. I tried running with the Minimus Trail on a tartan track initially in order to compare it to the Road version — it felt like too much cushioning because of the lugs on the Vibram outsole. Maybe like running with football or soccer cleats on the track.

The true test here is to run the trails. So I headed for the same trail to do an apple to apple comparison. It was a blow out. The Minimus Trail is by far the lightest and most comfortable minimal trail shoe I have tested thus far — Inov-8 Bare Grip is probably the only wildcard here and it should be available early next year. The total running time without stopping is not my primary goal but I do track all the miles and time that I spend running.

I ran the downhill fast and without braking — on the ball of my foot and no heel strikes. I had to heel strike downhill once in a while because of sharp turns and avoiding fresh animal droppings. The Minimus Trail hugs your feet and heel nicely and is just very snug — it just feels natural. I did feel sore on my arches and thighs the next day because of the uphill and downhill running.

Hopefully for the better. Just have to slow down and take it easy sometimes. Summarizing, this is the best trail shoes I have tested so far. Barefoot runners will like the 5mm forefoot midsole — not too much and not too little. It can only get better with a zero drop version in the near future late Along with the premium performance foam, lightweight support is offered.
